ACH Payment
An electronic, bank-to-bank funds transfer processed through the ACH network, governed by Nacha.
An ACH payment is an electronic, bank-to-bank funds transfer processed through the Automated Clearing House network in the United States. Governed by Nacha, the network handles two types: ACH credits push funds to a recipient (as with payroll direct deposits), and ACH debits pull funds from an account (as with recurring bill payments). Standard settlement takes one to two business days.
How ACH Payments Work
When a business initiates an ACH payment, its bank batches the file and routes it through the ACH network to the recipient's bank. ACH credits push funds out, as with payroll direct deposits. ACH debits pull funds in, as with automated vendor billing. Standard transfers settle in one to two business days; same-day ACH is available for eligible transactions, subject to a per-transaction cap under current Nacha rules. In an AP workflow, payment automation connects approved invoices to ACH disbursement without manual bank file entry.
ACH Payments vs. Wire Transfers
ACH and wire transfers are both electronic payment methods, but they operate on separate networks. ACH runs on Nacha's batch-settlement system at low cost, typically cents to a few dollars per transaction. Wire transfers use Fedwire or SWIFT for real-time gross settlement and generally carry higher fees. ACH transactions can be returned or disputed under Regulation E; wires are generally final once sent. Wires serve high-value, time-critical, or international transfers that ACH cannot accommodate. Neither is categorically superior.
Benefits of ACH Payments
ACH costs less per transaction than both paper checks and wire transfers. Eliminating physical checks removes printing, mailing, and float delays from the payment cycle. Predictable settlement windows give finance teams cleaner cash flow visibility. ACH also presents a smaller fraud surface than paper checks, since there is no physical instrument to intercept or alter in transit. Nacha's authorization requirements create a documented consent record that supports cleaner audit trails.
ACH Payments and Your ERP
ERP systems record the payment obligation, but ACH execution requires that data to move cleanly from invoice approval to bank file generation without manual rekeying. Teams running Microsoft Dynamics (GP, Business Central, or D365 Finance and Operations) or Acumatica can connect invoice approval workflows directly to vendor payments through MetaViewer's AP automation and MetaConnect integration, so approved payables flow toward ACH disbursement without re-entering vendor banking details.
